Back home at Stranda
A natural extension of the majestic scenery around it, this modern functionalist villa is perfectly located in Stranda, Slettvoll’s home town. This is where Live Slettvoll chose to build a life with her family, as the third generation to carry on her grandparents' life's work.
The striking scenery was one of the reasons why Live moved back to Stranda, her home village, in 2017, after 12 years in Oslo. Stranda is also the place where Live's grandmother and grandfather, Bergit and Hans Slettvoll, started producing rattan furniture which they cycled down to the local ferry to ship out to their customers. She has settled here with her husband, Øystein, and their two children, and now works as the creative director at Slettvoll.
BACK TO THE ROOTS
Live and Øystein returned to Stranda to be closer to the headquarters, not to mention the wonderful landscape she grew up in. The couple decided to build their own home in this location, and they had a clear vision of how it should look. They did their own sketches and hired a local architect and local craftsmen to design and build the house.
“We wanted a modern house that was bright and light while also having dark contrasts. We could decorate with darker colours because the large windows let in a lot of light. I believe that a very modern style can quickly become impersonal, so I wanted some elements that added weight and personality,” says Live about the home, which is surrounded by the Sunnmøre Alps.
The house has three floors and several terraces, because as Live says, when the weather in Norway is nice, you have to enjoy it. The kitchen is the most popular room and also has the most square metres. The six-metre-high ceiling and nearly equally tall windows let in plenty of light.
“The kitchen has always been my favourite room in the house. That’s probably due to all of the good food and many conversations you have here. We have a dining area, bar stools near the kitchen island, and a lounge group in our kitchen, so there's plenty of room to relax,” says Live.
Lasting style
You can almost feel the house being embraced by the natural surroundings. Within the large windows, each piece of furniture has its place and contributes to the overall look and feel. The timeless yet contemporary decor creates a lasting home - keeping with the striking surroundings.
The style in the home is complete and personal, where practically every item of furniture represents a piece of the history of the family business. The children's favourite piece of furniture is the charming children's chair East Petit, which was inspired by the original East armchair, designed by Live's mother, Torill, in 2012.
The master bedroom has a spectacular view of the Storfjord, so there's little reason to close the curtains. The bed and headboard are from Slettvoll. The chair in the corner is a 1920s antique and heirloom from Live's grandfather, Hans Slettvoll.
