When decoration becomes art
Malene Birger’s artistic expression extends far beyond her canvases. She has designed several interior design items for the Slettvoll and Malene Birger collection The collection of home accessories includes, among other things, glass lanterns, sculptures, boxes, blankets, ceramics, and lamps. Malene designs and prepares the products in collaboration with Slettvoll.
Organic shapes
Malene Birger's creations for Sletvoll include interior ceramics. These consist of two different-sized jars and a dish with the same design. Each object is designed by a master potter in Mallorca and then hand-painted in cream and black by Malene. The limited edition, signed ceramic items are available for purchase.
HANDMADE
Muro is a series of handblown clear glass candle holders with white and black spots, that complements the other design elements by Slettvoll and Malene. The black and white spots are small pieces of coloured glass that were added to the clear glass through a variety of heating processes in order to achieve the desired pattern. This means that each item is unique. Finally, a thin layer of glass is applied, giving the whole thing a golden finish.

A balanced mix of materials
“A good home and surrounding environment are created by striking a balance that is inspiring, welcoming, and harmonious,” says Malene. She describes herself as a maximalist under control. Therefore, it has been important for her to design objects that help establish order, particularly around her desk, an important creative space.
The Porto series consists of streamlined linen-and-leather-covered boxes, desk mats and pencil holders that fit in well within Malene's design universe. The same holds true for the Felantix box, which is available in three sizes. The boxes are upholstered with cream-coloured linen and have a decorative black and rust-coloured band. The Felantix box also has leather handles.
Sculptural idiom
The Slettvoll & Malene Birger collection also consists of sculptural decor. With contrasting materials and expressive shapes, the objects can create exciting eye-catching or "statement pieces"» in the interior. The sculptures are crafted from contrasting materials, such as wood and metal, in abstract forms with a dash of ethnic influence.
In the lights in the collection, sculptural forms and contrasting materials recur. Malene Birger, who shares Slettvoll's passion for distinctive lamps, has created table lamps that reflect their design universe. The lamps are handcrafted in Belgium and serve as atmospheric room accents.
